Cooking for your Kerry

As you probably already know, onions and chocolate are poisonous to dogs. I generally don’t use salt when cooking for my dogs so that includes
unsalted butter. For cooking oil, use a vegetable oil; I prefer the saflower oil.


All baking for you pet should be in clearly marked containers to avoid embarassment with other family members, company, etc. (I used to
take dog treats to work with me when I worked at the stockyards. I kept some in my desk for the border collie who came in daily with
her owner to help with branding the cattle etc. The cattle buyers often went through the desks at night ? what a surprise when I came
in one morning and found that all the dog treats were missing. Wonder if the cattle buyers enjoyed them?)

For those harbouring Klepto Kerries, I strongly advise that you leave the dogs outside while you are baking. I have had the dogs come in
and eat the entire batch of treats that was cooling on the counter. Containers also need to have tight fitting lids, as knocking the
container off the counter will often dislodge the lid and make a very happy doggie.


  • Volume
    • 1 cup = 250 ml
    • 1 tbsp = 5 ml

Whole Wheat Cream Cheese Danish

  • 1/4 cup low fat cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup apple sauce
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsps vanilla
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  1. Mix first five ingredients until blended, then add flour.
  2. Roll out dough to 1/4 inch and cut with cookie cutters.
  3. Bake in 350 oven for 20 minutes.

Comments: The recipe calls for letting them dry in the oven for 1 to 2 hours more but I gave mine to the dogs without the extra drying and they still liked their treats.

Canine Quiche


  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 cup safflower oil
  • 1/2 cup water


  • 3 eggs
  • 2/3 cups simulated bacon bits
  • 3 tbsp cheddar cheese powder
  • 3 tbsp flour

To make pastry:

  1. Mix flour, oil and water to form a firm dough. If you find it too sticky to work with, add a small amount of flour.
  2. Roll out to 3mm thickness.
  3. Cut into circles. (You can use a regular muffin tin but I prefer the smaller ones)
  4. Place circles in muffin tin. Trim excess off edges
  5. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes.
  6. Remove from oven.

To make filling:

  1. Beat eggsuntil frothy.
  2. Add bacon bits, cheese and flour.
  3. Mix well.
  4. Pour into pastry shells, almost filling to the top.
  5. Bake at 350 for 60 minutes or until golden brown.

Doggy Pudding

  • 1 cup low fat cottage cheese
  • 1 cup mashed banana
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 1 tsp cinnamon or mint
  1. Mix ingredients and store in air tight container in fridge.

Comments: This can be used as a topping for the finicky eater or as a straight treat. I suggest 1/2 cup serving. Does your dog like another kind of fruit? Try adding some of this instead of the banana.

Beefy Bones

  • 1 cup (250 ml) flour (whole wheat or corn flour)
  • 1 cup (250 ml) yellow corn meal
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) wheat germ
    (substitute: rolled oats for wheat allergy)
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) ground beef
    (substition: chopped, sauteed chicken livers or ground lamb)
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) beef broth
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) vegetable oil
  • 1 egg
  1. In medium bowl, mix the dry indredients together and
  2. add them to the wet indredients.
  3. You can either roll these out and cut into fancy shapes (ambitious) or drop by spoonfuls onto a cookie sheet.
  4. Bake at 350 F for about 30 minutes.
  5. Cool and store in an airtight container in fridge.
    (May also be frozen).

By popular demand, here is Paul Motzenbecker’s recipe for

Liver Muffins.


  • 1 corn muffin box mix
  • 1 egg
  • 1 package of fresh, uncooked chicken livers (1 lb)
  • 1-2 garlic cloves, finely diced
  • 2-3 parsley leaves, finely diced
  1. Set oven at 350 degrees.
  2. Puree the chicken livers in blender. (raw)
  3. Slowly add in the rest of the ingredients, mix to even consistency.
  4. Lightly grease muffin tins and spoon mixture in to molds. (or paper muffin cups can be substituted)
  5. Bake for 20 minutes or until tooth pick comes out clean.


  • Cream cheese, 8 ounces, softened.
  • Wheat germ, 2 Tablespoons
  1. Blend above at room temp and frost cooled cupcakes.
  2. Once set, place in refrigerator GUARDED from the Kerry nose.

Liver Jerky for Kerries

  • beef or lamb liver
  • garlic powder optional
  1. Take a package of beef liver, cut into pieces (You know your dog best and any weight concerns. I generally cut the liver in pieces about 1/2 to 3/4 inches square. That would be about 1 to 2 cm. )
  2. Place on a greased cookie sheet. (You can sprinkle with garlic powder if you like but I find that the dogs are pretty crazy for this even without).
  3. Bake in the over at 350 F (about 150 C) for 30 minutes then turn over and cook the other side for about 15 minutes. I have found that depending on your oven, you need to adjust the temperature. This should be more of a drying process than a cooking process.
  4. Put some in a container in the fridge and if you like, you can freeze the rest.

Midnight Snacks

  • 1 cup liver jerky (optional)
  • 1 cup bacon bits (you can use the simulated bacon bits found in the bulk foods section)
  • 1 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp garlic powder
  1. Mix cereals in large roasting pan.
  2. Add beef jerky.
  3. Melt butter, cool then add parmesan cheese, garlic powder and bacon bits.
  4. Pour mixture over cereal and mix thouroughly.
  5. Bake in oven at 225 F for 45 minutes.
  6. Let cool, then store in airtight container (ice cream pails work great). Freeze for long term storage. (I usually keep in the cupboard with the cereal as mix is generally gone in 1 to 2 weeks.)

Dog Food for the Senior Dog

  • 2 cans dog food
  • 1 pkg frozen mixed vegetables (2 lb or 1kg pkg) – thawed
  • 4 cups Bran Flakes
  • 2 pkgs Knox unflavoured gelatin
  • 1 cup (250 ml) cool water
  • 1 cup hot water
  1. In large bowl, soak the gelatin in the cup of cool water for 15 minutes.
  2. Add first 3 ingredients
  3. Pour hot water over the mix.
  4. Store in air tight container (ice cream pails work great) and store in fridge up to one week.

Comments: “I used this recipe when my Old English Sheepdog was a senior ?I had a lot of trouble getting her to eat and this seemed to work well.” Lynn Carrier

Frosty Paws

  • 1 32 oz container of plain yogurt
  • 1 large jar of baby food (suggest strawberry/banana)
  • 2 tbsp of honey
  • 2 tbsp peanut butter (creamy)
  1. Mix together and put in 3 oz Dixie cups.
  2. Cover with foil and freeze. The recipe makes about 12 ? 3 oz cups.

Comments: A great cooler in hot weather. Like some people, some dogs may get “brain freeze” from this.” Lynn Carrier


  • 1 cup (250 ml) unsweetened fruit juice
  • 1 cup (250 ml) water
  1. Mix ingredients
  2. Pour into ice cube trays.
  3. Give a cube to your dog periodically on a hot day.

Abby’s Liver Lumps

Contributed by a loving Kerry Mom

  • 1 lb (450 gr) beef liver
  • 1 tsp ( 5 ml) garlic powder
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups (500 ml) flour or corn meal
  1. Mix liver, egg and garlic powder in the blender until the liver is liquid.
  2. Stir in flour, a little at time until you have a thick but pourable batter.
  3. Spread in an 8 inch square pan.
  4. Bake at 350 F until dry but not crisp, about 30 minutes.
  5. Cut into bite sized squares and store in freezer.

Foccacia Bread

  • 3 cups corn flour
  • 1 cup bacon bits
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 cup warm water
  1. Combine first five ingredients in a bowl
  2. Add water slowly, mixing constantly until a stiff dough forms. Additional flour may be required.
  3. Knead dough for 2 minutes.
  4. Roll out to 1 inch thickness and cut with cookie cutter (or top of a glass).
  5. Can be topped with minced tomato.
  6. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet at 350 F for about 20 minutes.
  7. Turn off the oven and allow the treats to harden.

Gravy Biscuits

  • 2 cups (1250 g) flour
  • 6 tbsps chicken gravy
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup powdered skim milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 small jars chicken flavoured baby food
  1. Mix all ingredients in a bowl
  2. Roll out dough
  3. Cut with cookie cutters
  4. Place on greased cookie sheet
  5. Bake at 350 F for 20 to 25 minutes

Chicken Liver Brownie (the best pill giver recipe)

  • 1 container chicken livers
  • 1 pkg graham crackers (made into crumbs)

    or 1 cup of graham cracker crumbs
  • 3 tbps molasses
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Process graham crackers in food processor until crumbs.
  3. Remove and add chicken livers–process then add crumbs and molasses.
  4. Pour into a glass brownie pan (sprayed with cooking spray)
  5. Microwave 7 minutes or in oven for 25 minutes
  6. Turn out on a plate immediately–cut into bite sized cubes while warm.
  7. Keep refrigerated–or freeze.

Comments: “Raw livers in the processor make a yucky mess, but your dogs will love you for it.”

Turkey Jerky for Kerries

  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 3 tsps Kobe sauce
  1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees.
  2. Mix the two ingredients and spread thinly on a small cookie sheet with your hands.
  3. Bake for approx 2 1/2 hours. Periodically during baking, blot the jerky with a paper towel to absorb excess grease.
  4. Cut jerky into desired size and bake for another 2 hours.

Comments: “I have tried making the jerky with ground chicken and extra lean ground beef. These have a little more fat in them so the resulting product doesn’t keep as well but the dogs still love it. I have tried other marinades including teryaki and liquid smoke and these also seem to make the dogs pretty happy. If you don’t want to cook the extra two hours, don’t. My dogs like it both ways (of course, its meat).” Lynn Carrier

“Just a suggestion: when baking for the dogs, I put most of the baking in a container in the freezer and only put a small container in the fridge. Whenever the container in the fridge runs out, I fill it from the freezer container. (Or I just feed them directly out of the freezer container. This way, you don’t need to worry about their treats going bad.” Lynn Carrier

Sweet Potato Biscuit

  • 2 cups flout
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 2 cups mashed sweet potato
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp each ginger powder and garlic powder
  1. Combine sweet potatoes, peanut butter and eggs in blender
  2. Pour into a bowl
  3. Add dry ingredients.
  4. Roll out dough
  5. Cut with cookie cutters
  6. Bake at 300 F for 45 minutes
  7. Turn off oven and leave cookies to dry for at least 3 hours.


  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 cups grated vegetables (zuchini, carrots, sweet potato)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  1. Mix all ingredients
  2. Pour into greased muffin tins.
  3. Bake at 325 F for 20 minutes (longer if you use the larger muffin tins).

Good Dogs

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup powdered skim milk
  • 2 tbsps garlic powder
  • 1 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs
  1. Mix all ingredients
  2. Roll out dough
  3. Cut in 1 inch squares
  4. Bake for 25 minutes at 350 F.

K-9 Kupcakes

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 cooking oil
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1 egg
  1. Mix the dry and wet ingredients separatley
  2. Combine quickly
  3. Fill up the muffin tins with about 2 1/2 tbl spoons
  4. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes


  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  1. Mix together
  2. Frost
  3. 🙂

Turkey – Christmas Treats

  • 1/2 Lb ground turkey (or chicken)
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs (with stuffing seasoning)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup grated carrot (or I used 1/2 cup mixed frozen vegetables)
  1. Mix all ingredients
  2. Place on cookie sheet.
  3. Bake in oven at 350 for about 15 iminutes (depending on the size of the meat balls)
  • 3 6 oz. containers of plain low fat yogurt
  • 1/2 cup pf peanut butter
  • 1 4 oz jar of baby food
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  1. In a medium bowl combine all ingredients
  2. Blend well
  3. Pour mixture into small dixie cups
  4. Place Milk Bone in center of each cup
  5. Freeze overnight
  6. Once frozen, peel away the cup and serve.

Carob Truffles

  • 1 1/2 cups carob chips
  • 1 cup peanut butter (chunky or smooth)
  • 1 cup wheat germ
  1. Melt carob chips in double boiler, stirring constantly. Remove from heat.
  2. Add peanut butter and wheat germ. Stir until mixture becomes firm enough to make a ball in your palms. (It may be necessary to cool the mixture in the refrigerator).
  3. Form balls and roll in wheat germ, oat bran, ground flax or cracked wheat.
  4. Transfer to air tight container in fridge or freezer.

Peanut Butter Biscotti

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat or assorted flour
  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose or assorted flours
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cups oil
  • 1 cups crunchy peanut butter
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • water
  • 1 cups carob chips (optional)
  1. Combine flours and baking soda in bowl.
  2. Add egg, oil, peanut butter, and stir with a wooden spoon until lumpy.
  3. Add carob chips.
  4. Slowly add water 1 teaspoon at a time until a stiff dough forms. Do not over mix.
  5. Divide dough in half and form 2 logs.
  6. Place on lightly greased baking sheets and flatten logs to 1 inch high.
  7. Bake at 325 for 30 minutes. Remove and cool for 20 minutes.
  8. With a serrated knife, cut logs into 1/2 inch slices.
  9. Return slices to baking sheet and bake at 325 for 20 minutes.
  10. Cool and store in container in fridge or freezer.

Woof Woof Waffles

  • 4 cups corn flour
  • 1/2 cup corn meal
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 cups water
  1. Mix all ingredients
  2. Roll out dough and cut into 8 inch squares.
  3. Spray cold waffer iron with cooking spray then place squares in and close waffle iron to make impressions.
  4. Carefully take the “waffles” out and place on a greased cookie sheet.
  5. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour.

Hound Hearts

  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 pound chicken hearts (or hearts and gizzards)
  • One 14.5 ounce can diced tomatoes in juice
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • 4 tbsp dried basil
  1. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the chicken hearts and cook, stirring frequently, until the meat is brown – about 3 to 4 minutes.
  3. Place the cooked chicken hearts including oil, in a blender with tomatoes, including juice. Puree.
  4. Place the flour, cooked rice, chicken heart puree and basil in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly to combine.
  5. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick.
  6. Using a cookie cutter, cut into heart shapes.
  7. Combine dough scraps and continue to roll out and cut into shapes until all dough has been used.
  8. Place cookies on ungreased, foil lined baking sheets and bake in a preheated 325 degree oven for 30 to 35 minutes.
  9. Turn off the oven and let the cookies dry in it for 3 hours or overnight.


  • Makes 5 to 6 dozen cookies.
