On August 5, 2007, Rescue Coordinator Linda Grisley writes from Edmonton:
Zen (orange collar) who is now owning Rhonda Rowe here in Edmonton.
He?s had his second set of shots, and has a mild bacterial infection in one eye, lot?s of fun trying to put eye drops in a teething puppy. Other than that
he?s fine. He?s gone from being a quiet, sleepy little guy, to running after the cats, and tucking his tail and racing madly around the yard. He had
much fun yesterday in the park playing with another 10 week old. Is he CUTE, and is he SMART! He can sit already (that took about 10 minutes, no kidding)
so I think we?ll take him at least to Open classes. Puppy kindergarten starts in September, I had forgotten how much fun it was having a dog! It?s
4 steps forward and 1 back with the house training, but it?s funny how you can actually be happy about picking up poop from the hardwood.
Hope you had a great Christmas and New Years. I?m just emailing you a line or two about my beautiful boy Zen aka Fergus. Zen is a constant joy to me and
my partner. This little guy has the charm of the irish to be sure. And game! We go to an off leash area that has consistently good dogs. Zen seems
attracted to the larger dogs and you just wouldn?t believe him playing with them. He gets knocked around and goes back full tilt. If there?s a stick
or ball to be had, he will get it by hook or by crook!
He finishes novice obedience tonight and starts agility training next week. I hope he loves it.
He is so good with all other animals (although he?s the devil for rabbits).
I got a camera for Christmas so look forward to some pictures soon. Please forgive the overgrown fur though, I like to keep it long during our cold winter
months, even though he has many winter outfits including boots of course!

Subject: [KBL] : Regarding Zen the Magnificent…

Rhonda Rowe, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada has Zen, formerly Fergie of the Magnificent 7.
Zen came in first in his basic obedience class despite the handicap of a “mom” who actually had other things going on in her life at the same time. She
writes that though she was limited in the time spent, she gave him a quick review, & when the time came to show-off, he performed better than any
of his classmates. Yay Zen.! & Now he is flying through beginners agility – ducking down to get inside the tunnel, jumping over the little fence.
In the dog park he seeks out the big dogs, the bigger they are, the more he likes it. Fearless Fergie masquerading as Zen… And he gives back as good
as he gets in loving as well as playing. “Pop” took him for a necessary walk, & fell due to the treacherous footing, resulting in a broken ankle.
Zen looks after him, & snuggles with the convalescent so loneliness doesn’t impede the healing process.
My thanks to coordinator Linda Grisley who helped place this little guy in such a great home, & thanks also to Rhonda & Pete for giving him everything
a Kerry Kid needs.

[…]Zen is having fun at the park and in the van with his girl pal Jazz.
Later this month [February 2008] Zen and I will complete the requirements for him becoming a pet therapy dog. We will then get into some volunteer work,
not sure where yet but I know that teens are a needy group.
It has been horribly cold here [Alberta, Canada], but except for a couple of days he wants to go for a walk despite it all. He of course has boots and
a snow suit for those occasions. […]
Zen had a cyst removed from his chest area, in between his front legs. It was initially thought that this would get cleared up with a course of antibiotics,
but it flared up again. At that time the vet thought that surgical removal was the way to go. He had it removed, but it has reappeared again, in close
to or the same spot. This time I decided to have it removed surgically directly, instead of messing around with antibiotic treatments. I asked to have
the tissue biopsied. The vet said that when she was removing it she saw a canal that went to the sternum. […]

Zen, formerly known as Fergie lives in Ontario, Canada, with Pete & Rhonda, & his little red-haired sister – a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
named Halo. He is King of his Kingdom, his Kingdom is Fun & he lives it from the time he gets up in the morning. He greets you with a toy
in his mouth & glint in his eye that says come play with me! He is very smart, well loved, & “a true joy & a real jewel”.
